The development of the gay movement and what events had to take place for radicalization

Based on the study guide, it seems as though the gay movement was almost entirely based on the subject of HIV/AIDS. Gay men having sex seemed to be the issue that was spreading this disease. Since it is sexually-transmitted, heterosexual couples did not seem to contract this disease. On the other hand, this disease almost destroyed the gay community since it killed off so many members. Because of this, awareness of the LBGTQ community has risen, and members strove to improve gay rights and such. The police did shut down some rallies and movements, but the community generally refused to give up. Eventually, the subject of this disease grew so frantic that there had to be funding for this disease. Over the years, the movement to cure AIDS grew and grew. In spite of this, many people were still homophobic and resented many homosexual people. Education grew about using condoms and how to prevent contracting this disease. Though stigma has generally decreased over the years, gay men are still discriminated against, even to this day. For example, when same-sex marriage was finally legalized, many people showed that they did not support this legislation, and there were many protests to counteract this law. Clearly, the gay community has suffered and will continue to brace through future events. As homophobia runs throughout the nation, it will be hard to advocate for radicalization and the full acceptance of the gay community.
